Kullu(HP), July 4 (UNI) Twelve people were killed when a private bus fell down a deep gorge near Jangla Sainj in Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh on Monday.
State Spokesperson said the accident on the Newuly Marg occurred when the bus on the Shensher to Sainj route (HP 30-A -0646 Anjali) rolled down the cliff.
Of the four injured, one succumbed at the Regional Hospital Kullu. “Casualties in Kullu bus mishap increased to 12, three injured admitted in Regional Hospital Kullu,” SP Gurudev Singh said.
Earlier unconfirmed reports were about at least 16 casualties, including school children while the number of injured were said to be over a score when the bus fell in the gorge around 8.30 am.
Three Ambulances and medical teams rushed on the spot. A rescue teams of fire department from Larji and Banjar conducting rescue operation. Three home guards rescue team from Kullu were also deployed for rescue operation.
The bus headed towards Sainj rolled down the cliff in the Jangla area of Sainj valley on the Neoli-Shansher route.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is in Andhra Pradesh, tweeted: “The bus accident in Kullu, Himachal Pradesh is heart-rending. In this tragic hour my thoughts are with the bereaved families.
“I hope those injured recover at the earliest. The local administration is providing all possible assistance to those affected.”
The PM Office tweeted: “The Prime Minister has approved an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh each from PMNRF for the next of kin of those who have lost their lives due to the tragic bus accident in Himachal Pradesh. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000 each.”
As soon as the incident was reported, police and rescue teams rushed to the spot and started rescue operations, an official said.
Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur tweeted: “The sad news was received about the accident of a private bus in Sainj Valley of Kullu. The entire administration is on the spot, the injured are being taken to the hospital.
“May God rest the departed souls in this incident and give strength to the bereaved families. I pray to God that at least one person gets injured.”
