Chennai : PMK Founder Dr S Ramadoss today urged the Centre to
sanction Rs 1,000 crore in the first phase to undertake rescue and relief works in
rain hit areas of Tamil Nadu, besides deputing a Central team to assess the
damages caused in the State.
In a statement here, he said once the process of estimating the losses caused by
the rains were completed, the Centre should allot the funds to be sought by the
State government from the National Disaster Relief Fund.
Pointing out that the 15th Finance Commission had recommended only Rs 1,360 crore
to the Tamil Nadu government for disaster management for the year 2021-22, he said
Rs 8,931 crore were spent by the state till July towards COVID prevention and treatment.
Since more expenses has to be spent towards COVID works, the Centre should share
the burden and responsibility of the State government in this situation, Dr Ramadoss said.
