New Delhi : India should host Taiwanese film festival as part of strengthening the bilateral relations, said Mumin Chen, Deputy Representative of Taipei Economic and Cultural Center, on Wednesday.
Speaking to UNI, Chen expressed disappointment that the Bollywood directors and producers have not yet explored Taiwan locales.
He said, “Till now, none of the Bollywood movies have been shot in Taiwan. I see that the makers are yet to see the potential of the country. They go to Europe, US, Hong Kong and Singapore.
“We do provide some incentives such as funding for movies that come here to shoot.
“We also hope that the film industries of both sides could have more exchanges.”
However, the first step in strengthening the bilateral relations in this field is allowing Taiwanese films to be showcased in India, he pointed out.
Chen said, “Taiwanese film industry is very small compared to the Indian, so the first step should be making Indians familiar with Taiwanese movies.
“In other countries, Taiwanese film festivals are hosted. We hope such events take place in India as well.”
Currently, MX Player and Netflix, among all OTT platforms, is showing Taiwanese movies, the envoy said, adding that not much of Indian population watch these movies.
“The problem is that if a movie is not in Hindi then the local Indian audience is probably not interested.
“The solution to this problem is that Bollywood movie makers should visit Taiwan and explore the country.
“Till now, none of the top tier has visited the country. They went to China not Taiwan though they have friends in Taiwan.
“I hope that Taiwanese movies and documentaries get a chance to be shown in India,” he added.
