In the upcoming United Nations General Assembly next week, India has decided to support Foreign Minister of Maldives Abdulla Shahid for President. The decision may upset India’s ally and close neighbour, Afghanistan, which has former Foreign Minister Zalmai Rassoul in the running. The UNGA head will be chosen from the Asia-Pacific group this time, which has 53 member states.
