In a letter to the Prime Minister, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has urged the Centre to minimize taxes levied on fuel after petrol prices reached ₹100 per litre in the state. She also complained that the “cruel” hike in fuel prices has led to the increase in prices of essential food items. The CM wrote that tax and surcharge levied by the Central government on oil and petroleum products have been increased by a whopping 370 per cent since 2014 “at the cost of the common people”.
