Thiruvananthapuram : Mafias are functioning to steal the funds meant for the socio and economic development of Adivasis in Kerala, senior Congress leader and former leader of Opposition in Kerala Assembly Ramesh Chennithala said on Monday.
The senior Congress leader expressed his views after visiting Puravimala Adivasi colony near Amboori where about 512 Kani Adivasi families are settled in the Parassala taluk of Thiruvananthapuram district.
As the government is not able to completely stop the stealing of the funds allotted for various welfare schemes for the Adivasis, the living standards of tribals will not be improved, he said.
Urging the government to improve the basic infrastructure at Puravimala Adivasi colony, he said all projects should be completed in a time-bound manner.
Visiting Adivasi colony on every New Year day is a practice Ramesh Chennithala began when he had been functioning as the KPCC president in the early 2007’s as part of the Gandhi Gram programme for the development of the Adivasis.
Earlier, the Mission Manager of National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM), Seema Bhaskar, also alleged that local maffias are sabotaging all development activities taking place in tribal settlement colonies in Kerala.
Seema Bhaskar also called for a mechanism to directly transfer the benefits of all welfare schemes to the Adivasis in the State.
