Mumbai : Rahul Narvekar the BJP and Eknath Shinde group backed candidate was elected as Maharashtra State Assembly Speaker on Sunday.
Maharashtra Assembly Deputy Speaker Narhari Zirwal declared the Narvekar elected as state assembly speaker.
Narvekar defeated MVA backed candidate Rajan Salvi of the Shiv Sena.
After the counting of votes Narvekar got 164 votes, while Salvi got 107 votes.
While two Samajwadi Party MLAs including Abu Azmi and the lone AIMIM MLA abstained from voting.
All in all eight MLAs absented themselves during the voting process..
BJP’s Chandrakant Patil put the motion to elect Narvekar as assembly speaker while Tupe put the motion on behalf of Salvi in the house.
A special two-day assembly session was called by Governor Bhagat Singh Koshiyari to elect the new assembly speaker and to allow the new government led by Eknath Shinde, who was sworn in on July 1 to under go floor test. Shinde became the CM after the previous MVA government led by Uddhav Thackeray collapsed after a rebellion led by Shinde switched sides.
The motion for the floor test will be put up in the house on Monday.
