New Delhi : Maulana Abul Kalam Azad remains relevant even today, Sheikh Aqeel Ahmed, Director, National Council of Urdu said on Thursday as he paid tribute to the first education minister on his birth anniversary.
He was delivering a lecture titled ‘Legacy of Maulana Azad in Today’s India’, organized by the National Council for the Promotion of Urdu Language.
He said Maulana Azad left an indelible mark of his great personality in every field. He said Maulana Azad was the biggest advocate of national unity and inter-religion harmony.
Sheikh Aqeel said that it was Maulana who introduced the education system in independent India and made education compulsory for all sections of the society, making it a basic condition for national development.
Wajahat Habibullah, former chairman of the National Commission for Minorities, in his address said that the religious and cultural heritage of Maulana Azad is very important and worthy of emulation in present-day India.
He said that the tradition of Maulana Azad and his companions represents a united India and a common civilization, which is rooted in our ancient religious texts. He said Maulana Azad has said just as we are proud to have inherited the thirteen hundred years old heritage of Islam, in the same way he was also a part of the indivisible unity of India.
He highlighted the cultural diversity and cultural richness of India in the light of Indian religious traditions and ancient religious texts. He said that Maulana Azad was not only a scholar of Quran but also had a keen eye on Indian religions and for this reason he believed that unity of both Hindu and Muslim nations is essential for the security and development of India as a country.
