Thiruvananthapuram : Kerala Communist Party of India (Marxist) Acting Secretary A Vijayaraghavan on Wednesday claimed that more Congress leaders will join the party-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the state.
‘The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) is heading towards a major crisis’, Mr Vijayaraghavan told newspersons here.
“More leaders will leave the Congress and join the CPI-M in the coming days, in recognition of the political stance adopted by the Left,” he said.
The CPI-M leader said the UDF does not represent the interests of the people, but just another element of reactionary politics”
His comment comes in the wake of senior Congress leader KP Anilkumar quit the party and joined the CPI(M) here on Tuesday.
Mr Anilkumar alleged that Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President K Sudhakaran was functioning undemocratically and acting like a Sangh Parivar leader.
He said he was ending his 43-year-old relationship with the Congress party with a ‘heavy heart’.
However, Mr Sudhakaran told media that Mr Anilkumar was expelled from the primary membership of the party.
Later, Anilkumar visited AKG Centre, the State headquarters of the CPI (M), where he met party leaders including senior leader Kodiyeri Balakrishnan.
Mr Anilkumar was suspended from the Congress party on August 28 after he questioned the manner in which the new District Congress Committee (DCC) presidents, especially of Kozhikode, were appointed.
The Congress party was facing liquidation under the leadership of Mr Sudhakaran, he alleged.
Earlier, expelled Congress leader PS Prasanth has joined the ruling CPI(M).
He announced his decision at a press conference held at AKG Centre, the state headquarters of the CPI(M), in Thiruvananthapuram.
Prasanth was the UDF candidate from Nedumangad Constituency in the previous Assembly election in the State.
He was under suspension for making open allegations against current Thiruvananthapuram DCC president Palode Ravi.
Mr Prasanth was expelled from the party for making serious allegations against AICC general secretary KC Venugopal, a close confidant of Rahul Gandhi.
Earlier, former Congress MLA, AV Gopinath resigned from the primary membership of the party.
He represented Alathur assembly constituency in Palakkad from 1991-96 and had served as Palakkad DCC president from 2007 to 2009. He had unsuccessfully contested the Assembly polls from Palakkad in 2006 and Nenmara in 2016.
Mr Gopinath said he was ending his 50-year association with the Congress after he felt that he was let down by senior Congress leaders which forced him to leave the party.
