Puducherry : Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy on Monday unfurled the tricolour at the Gandhi thidal and also inspected a guard of honour presented by the Puducherry Armed police to mark the 67th Liberation Day of the Union Territory.
The contingents of Police, NCC, Scouts and Guides and students marched past during the event. Cultural programmes were also allowed as the Covid-19 cases have come down considerably in the UT.
On November 1, 1954, the UT was liberated from French colonialism following a referendum in which the elected representatives from Puducherry voted against the French and preferred to join India.
Subsequently, the French government effected the de-facto merger on this day in 1954. Later,the Indian govenremtn effected the de-jure transferring the territory to its union on August 16,1962. Since then, Puducherry was celebrating independence day on August 16.
Chief minister N Rangasamy during his earlier tenure declared November 1 as the Liberation Day in 2014 and started commemorating the day.
The Cabinet colleagues of the Chief Minister, Speaker R Selvam, legislators and senior officials of the territorial administration among others participated in the function.
Transport Minister Chandra Priyanka unfurled the tricolour in Karaikal region while PWD minister K Lakshminarayanan and Agriculture Minister C Jayakumar unfurled the flag in Yanam and Mahe regions of the UT respectively on the occasion.
