Russia has successfully launched the Arktika-M space satellite to monitor the arctic climate and northern latitudes for long periods of time. The satellite is also built to aid in retransmitting distress signals coming from ships, aircraft or people in remote areas as part of the International Cospas-Sarsat satellite-based search and rescue program.
