Snowfall in Himachal drags mercury down

Shimla : The high reaches of Himachal Pradesh have been receiving snowfall since Sunday morning, thus, increasing the coldwave in the state, according to officials in Meterological Department.

The gateway to Lahaul Spiti, 13,050 ft Rohtang Pass, Kunzum Pass, Baralacha, Lady of Keylong, Sapatrishi hill Goshal hills, Shikaridevi of Mandi, Dhauladhar ranges of Kangra, Sachpass, Manimehash, high reaches of

Bharmour and Pangi in Chamba, Kinner Kailash of Kinnuar, high reaches of Dodra and Kawar of Shimla

received another major snowfall.

Met office recorded 18 cm snow at Gondhla in Lahaul Spiti district, Hansa 10.3 cm and Keylong three cm. Tourist resort Dalhousie in Chamba had 77 mm rainfall, Kehri 57.2 mm, Una 53.4 mm, Bangana 45 mm, Bilaspur 45 mm, Ghamroor in Knagra 42.4 mm and Nagrota Surian 41 mm and Chamba 32 mm, Kangra 24.4 mm and Dharmshala 16.4 mm.

The intermittent rain and snowfall were also recorded in many other places of the state increasing the coldwave.

Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnuar district administration have announced alert for the locals and tourists and urged them not to climb the high hills or venture near the water streams.

The administration have asked the hotels, members of Panchayati Raj institutions and local self government to aware the local people and tourists and trekkers to not move out from their premises as the heavy rainfall may cause any natural disaster and snowbound the road and cause landslides.

Meanwhile, the tourists stranded at Batal in Kaza valley have been evacuated safely by the administration on Saturday. Earlier, 80 tourists were stranded in Kaza subdivision due to snowfall on October 17 and 18 snowfall.

With fresh and earlier snowfall two national highway and 35 link roads are snowbound.

The inclement weather along with heavy rain, snowfall and thunderstorm is keeping the normal life out of gears as 37 roads (35 link and two NH) are snowbound.

Power supply has also been disrupted due to heavy rain and thunderstorm in 274 areas, mostly in Laual Spiti and Chamba.

Deputy Commissioner Lahaul Spiti Neeraj Kumar said, “Manali-Leh National highway No 3 is snowbound between Darcha to Sarchu and National Highway No 505 is blocked from Gramphu to Losar. Including two NH, around 27 link roads are also snowbound including 12 in Lahaul and 15 in Udaipur. Power supply also disrupted by the snowfall in 21 distribution Transformer regions (DRT) in district.”

According to reports from Chamba, seven link roads are snowbound including three in Salooni and two each in Tissa and Chamba sub-vision. The power supply is not working in 250 localities in Chamba district as 172 DTR are disrupted in Tissa, 50 in Bhattiyat and 28 in Chamba sub-division.

The minimum temperature plummet under subzero in Keylong of Lahaul Spiti recorded minus 0.7 degree Celsius, Kalpa in Kinnuar 4.6 mm, Tourist resort Manali 7.5 degrees Shimla, Kufri, Dalhousie and Palampur in Kangra was ten degrees, Chamba 10.9 degrees, Solan and Jubbarhati in Shimla 12 degrees, Kangra 12.6 degrees, Sundernagar and Bhuntar 13 degrees , Hamirpur and Una 13.4 degrees each, ,Mandi 15.9 degrees, Nahan in Sirmaur 16 degrees.

The Met office has issued yellow warning as heavy rain, hailstorm, lightening, thunderstorm and snowfall is likely to happen in isolated areas of Chamba, Lahaul Spiti, Kangra, Kullu, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Una, Mandi Solan, Shimla and Sirmour.

Yellow warning is also issued for Dodra-Kwar, Shimla-Urban, Shimla Rural, Shimla Rural and Theog, Kumarsein Kandaghat and Rampur.

The Met office has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall and snowfall in many places in the state during next 24 hours.
